Al McKay's Personal Biography

Albert McKay was born on January 20, 1932 in Park, Arkansas, to John and Dora McKay.  John Caro McKay was the son of Allice Woodham McKay who was Cherokee. Al lived most of his young life in the Poteau area of Oklahoma in a meager farming home but with a loving Christian family to support and encourage him.  Al has three grown children and four grandchildren.

His hobbies are numerous but at the present include auctioneering and raising donkeys.  He and his wife, Becky, lived in Sulphur, Oklahoma for many years, but now reside in Stratford, Oklahoma, where they own and operate McKay Real Estate and Auction Company.

In the past, he has been active in Civic Activities in Sulphur with special interest in the economic growth of the town.  He served four years on the church board of the New Beginnings Church, being instrumental in the building and growth of the church.  He and Becky are still active members there.  Al is known by everyone as a friendly, caring and honest man.

1947 – Joined the Air Force at age 15 but was discharged for being too young
1948 – Joined the Army after turning 17
1950 - 1951 – Completed Officers Candidate School
1951 – 1052 – Served in 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, in which was awarded the Silver Star
1952 – Completed Speech and Instructor’s School
1953 – 1955 – ROTC Instructor at Rice Institute College in Houston, Texas
1955 – 1957 – Hospital Administrator in the 24th  Infantry of a MASH Unit in Korea
1957 – 1961 – Held Administrative Positions with the Federal Government
1961 – 1966 – Army Reserves
Ended 16 years military as a M/Sgt

Al has been assisting and serving as a chief for the Arkansas Cherokee Nation because he truly believes in the cause.  He plans to remain active in the process of becoming a federally recognized tribe.
